Philadelphia-based Cheerleader started off the night with a perfect-for-summer set full of indie rock that Seth Cohen would have loved (and I mean that in the best way possible). The quintet seemed to be having a great time on stage together, making me wish they were around DC all summer to play on the porches of NE and have a beer with us.
Next up, was our #1 band to watch of 2016 -- Paperwhite! The band started their set off with new-to-me song "On My Own" and the combination of the happiness of lead singer Katie Marshall's performance coupled with the upbeat electronic melody of the song was the perfect way to start off the set. The Brooklyn band continued to play on to an amazingly energetic crowd who were high on the first day of sunshine in a month and Paperwhite's delightful blend of music.
Paperwhite has come a long way since we first discovered them last year; no longer do they only have three songs for me to listen to on repeat, but they now have a clear albums worth of jams to perform. Listening to their breadth of music had me stop trying to compare them to bands I already liked (for the record, the answer would be the grandchild of CHVRCHES and Whitney Houston) and appreciating their music uniquely.
It was truly a delight to see this band live and I can't recommend them more for your summer playlists!
