{RECAP} Hopscotch Music Festival 2016

We're still smiling after an awesome long weekend in Raleigh, NC for our second time to Hopscotch Music Festival. We had a great time exploring Raleigh and getting a chance to discover new bands, revisit with some of our favorites, and finally catch some of our favorite up and coming bands live.

Some highlights of the festival include seeing thousands of people sing along to Sylvan Esso, a band whose music we've coveted since they only had one song on Soundcloud, and drinking wine in a fancy ass theater for a Young Thug show. Raleigh, of course, was the star of the festival and this year we were able to revisit old favorites (like Raleigh Times and Raleigh Beer Garden) and discover new ones like Boxcar Barcade (we pretty much timed all of our shows to account for an air hockey pit stop every night) and Crank Arm Brewery.

To get a full taste of what we were up to this past weekend, check out the vlogs Caleb made of each day below!

Day 1 (In which we were surrounded by the biggest of Wolf Parade fans and were inspired by their dance moves):

checking in is our jam.

Hey world. Life is getting progressively busier these days -- you might have noticed. Don't get us wrong, we love how busy we are! But we need a few weeks to focus on our day jobs. This is not a farewell -- we just need to breathe for a hot minute. We'll be popping back in occasionally with giveaways, festival and concert recaps, and more, but for the most part, consider this a TIOJ vacation. Thanks for understanding, people, and keep finding things that are your jam.

{THROWBACK} destiny's child

Full disclosure: I have absolutely no idea who Fifth Harmony is (yet Buzzfeed suggests that they're the girl group of the decade?). I also spent more time wondering why the girl on the left wasn't wearing jeans while all the others were than I did seeing if they would dance. But anyway, with a baller Destiny's Child tribute, I may need to look into who these chicas are. (Singing starts around 1:20.)

the summer set (and sofar sounds) are our jam

We've shared how much we love Sofar Sounds on the blog before and we've got to sing their praises again for a couple of reasons.

First, the DC chapter of Sofar has been stepping it up with the number of show offerings lately -- offering as any as 10 chances to attend an event a month. (Sign up here to get on their list no matter where you live if you haven't yet!)

Second, the bands they have are consistently impressive and super new to us. One of our latest discoveries has been The Summer Set. This Arizona-based quintet played at a recent DC Sofar event and were such a treat. We've had their jam "Figure Me Out" on repeat all week!

Third, their videos of the events are killer. (Not that we're biased to their videographer or anything ;) )

{INTERVIEW} the staves

Oh man, do we have such a treat for you guys! Today, we're sharing our latest interview with Camilla Staveley-Taylor of one of our most favorite bands The Staves. Read ahead as we chat with Camilla about being in a band with her sisters, what she's currently listening to, and their current North American tour!

Listen while you read:

Tell us about yourself! When did you go from being musically-talented sisters to a band?
It happened gradually, really. We always sang together round the house or at parties when the guitars would come out, and then one summer about 12 years ago we decided to do some songs at our local open mic night. We were running late so our friend wrote our name on the list. He wrote "The Staves" because everyone called us that anyway and "The Staveley-Taylors" is a bit of a mouthful! I suppose that was the start of it, although it still took us a long while to start gigging properly. I was still in school.

How would you describe your music to someone who hasn't heard it before? What song should they start with?
That's an impossible question! I don't know. Good?! I never know how to describe our own music. I think I'd just say that ours is harmony-based music. Most people call us folk but I don't think that's right, especially not the last album and current EP. I suppose we're a three-headed singer songwriter. That's fairly accurate. I'd say start with anything from our current EP Sleeping In A Car. That's most representative of us right now.

How is it being in a band with your sisters?
A constant power struggle... Nah, it's great. We've always been so close and that sense of ease and trust is so beneficial in a band situation. The bad side is there is no escape from the family roles you've been in all your life. We know everything about each other. That's both good and bad. I wouldn't change it though.

We love the Austin to Boston documentary that you were a part of -- what was it like to be a part of that experience?
It goes down as one of the best most fun experiences we've had as a band. It was so simple. Basically music and friends are fun! It all felt very romantic, and although it was insanely tiring with some massive drives, we were all in it together and the shows and mental times we all had made up for it.

summer isn't the same without "boys of summer"

Don Henley's "Boys of Summer" is a classic: a song that has wormed it's way into the hearts of beach bums of any age. The original song is pretty haunting on it's own, but KT Tunstall's live, stripped down cover is folksy and chilling on an entirely different level. I can't get enough of her voice.

What are your favorite summer songs, TIOJers?

{RECAP} cheerleader and paperwhite

On Thursday night we spent a long overdue night revisiting Black Cat Backstage to catch up-and-coming bands Cheerleader and Paperwhite.

Philadelphia-based Cheerleader started off the night with a perfect-for-summer set full of indie rock that Seth Cohen would have loved (and I mean that in the best way possible). The quintet seemed to be having a great time on stage together, making me wish they were around DC all summer to play on the porches of NE and have a beer with us.

Next up, was our #1 band to watch of 2016 -- Paperwhite! The band started their set off with new-to-me song "On My Own" and the combination of the happiness of lead singer Katie Marshall's performance coupled with the upbeat electronic melody of the song was the perfect way to start off the set. The Brooklyn band continued to play on to an amazingly energetic crowd who were high on the first day of sunshine in a month and Paperwhite's delightful blend of music.

Paperwhite has come a long way since we first discovered them last year; no longer do they only have three songs for me to listen to on repeat, but they now have a clear albums worth of jams to perform. Listening to their breadth of music had me stop trying to compare them to bands I already liked (for the record, the answer would be the grandchild of CHVRCHES and Whitney Houston) and appreciating their music uniquely.

It was truly a delight to see this band live and I can't recommend them more for your summer playlists!

We were giggling with anticipation when we heard the name of DC rapper Wale's latest hit "My PYT." Just as we anticipated, this new track pays respect to one of our most favorite Michael Jackson classics (and Glee covers + bonus Mike Chang dance off). Cannot wait to blast this on repeat as the weather finally starts to get nice again. Although, we gotta wonder why Wale is scheming for an "NY PYT" and not a "DC PYT"...

Roll down the windows and press play.

chloe x halle are my jam

Chloe and Halle Bailey are only teenagers. They're on a first name basis with Beyonce and were featured on "Lemonade." They count Michelle Obama as a fan. And if that wasn't enough, their debut single "Drop" is so amazing. I am inferior.

If you want to check out more from these badass sisters, their debut EP is available on Spotify!

{RECAP} oscar, the vaccines, and bloc party

Last Thursday, Caleb and I ventured back to Echostage to catch the all-British lineup of Oscar, The Vaccines, and Bloc Party. Unlike the last time we went to Echostage, the typical bootie short clad high schoolers were thankfully absent from the crowd and were instead replaced with like-minded twenty-somethings wearing sensible clothing, which was sign two for a great evening. (Sign one being the prevalence of Brits performing, of course.)

The band we were most anxious to hear was opener Oscar. Unfortunately, in that inevitable twist of fate when you're trying to make it over to NE after a long day of work, we missed Oscar's set by just seconds. To account for this unfortunate timing, I've been consoling myself with Oscar videos on YouTube. His most recent video for "Good Things" has been just the cure to help me stay positive in light of missing his set coupled with the fact that DC has decided to turn into Seattle this month.

Next up were more Londoners The Vaccines. While their name sounded familiar to me, seeing The Vaccines was a classic case of coming in with zero expectations and being quickly surprised and impressed. The band immediately got the crowd going with their indie rock music, reminiscent of the pseudo punk rock music that was popular about 10 years ago, and kept the crowd engaged with their relentless energy mixed with a dash of impossible "cool."

weekend thoughts...

Bonjour, Friday. Where have you been my whole life? This weekend is ushering in more rain (surprise, surprise) but also two whole days of rest, relaxation, riveting brunch plans and hopefully, rosé. Enjoy it, TIOJers.

Your Weekend Jam: The jury is in and we're 100% guilty of loving Selena's latest jam "Hands To Myself" and this remix from KANDY is the perfect shift into the weekend.

TIOJ Thoughts:

How Metro’s changes will impact DC music venues.

{PLAYLIST} hangout festival 2016

Hangout Music Fest isn't as well known as Lolla or as free-wheelin' as Coachella, but this little southern festival--inaugurated in 2010--is so amazing. Settled on the beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama, Hangout is going to see some truly amazing acts this year, ranging from the Weeknd to Jason Isbell to the Griswolds. There's a little something for everyone.

If you're heading down to the Deep South this weekend, we're totally jealous. This sold out festival has us sitting at our desks and wishing we were sipping some (spiked) sweet tea and jamming out. Press play and pretend with us!

{THROWBACK} "grenade"

As we were celebrating TIOJ's fifth birthday last week, I had quite the trip down memory lane as we listened to some of 2011's best. Among the hits that didn't make it onto our playlist was Bruno Mars' "Grenade," which features of one of my favorite lines in recent musical history -- "tell the devil I said hey when you get back to where you're from." ZING.

{RECAP} woods

Last week concert correspondent Alix hopped over to H St to check out Woods at Rock & Roll Hotel. Check out her recap below!

I had a fun time at the Woods show, due in part to their great opener, Ultimate Painting. Both groups play easy-to-listen-to folk/rock music, and Ultimate Painting started off the night with songs that were full of energy while being chill at the same time. “Central Park Blues” was a particularly enjoyable, “tap your toes to the beat” type of song, and I liked “Ten Street” a lot, too. Ultimate Painting was a really polished opener – I’d happily see them headline their own show.

When Woods came on, it took me a few songs to warm up to them. They started with some songs from their new album, City Sun Eater in the River of Light. The songs could best be described as trippy – the lead singer adopted a falsetto style (not my favorite), and his lyrics were interspersed with long sections of repetitive instrumentals that sounded more like static noise than music. From their new album, I thought that "Morning Light” was pretty good.

After playing material from their latest album, they went on to play a few songs from older albums. I much preferred the older songs – they had a stronger beat and were much more energizing, I really enjoyed “Shepherd” from their 2014 album, With Light and With Love. This part of their show was really enjoyable; I had fun listening to the more lively songs from their previous albums. While I prefer their older albums to their newest one, the band members were definitely good performers and put on a good show.

Thanks so much to Alix for reviewing and stay tuned for more!

feeling mellow with leisure and goldlink

If your band name is Leisure, you better be good at making some goddamn chill music. Thankfully, this is 100% true and this Kiwi band somehow convinced DC rapper GoldLink to get in on the vibes.

Dim the lights and take a listen to this gorgeous chill and incredibly sexy song. It is seriously everything that's been missing in our lives.

{THROWBACK} "are you that somebody"

Good R&B covers are pretty much my kyrptonite. So it's no surprise that I literally stopped everything I was doing when Lynn Olsen's cover of Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody" came through my earbuds. I suggest you do the same.

Craving more? Vibe to Banks' cover of this track as well.

{IF YOU LIKE} ed sheeran, justin bieber

(via 1/2/3)
If Justin Bieber's meandering, effortless, self-confident vocals merged with Ed Sheeran's mellow, acoustic sarcasm, you'd get Marc E. Bassy. It's as simple as that. When we listen to Marc's jam, "Wool," we swoon, we sway, and we get lost in this Californian's vibes. We know--we can't believe he's not British either.

If you're into Marc--and you should be--check out more of his music here and let's all keep our fingers crossed that he goes on tour soon!

{RECAP} darlingside

Concert Correspondent Morgan jaunted over to The Hamilton last week to catch folk group Darlingside. Check out her recap below!

I realized recently that most of the shows that I saw in 2015 fell pretty solidly in the electro-pop category. While I still enjoyed almost all of them, I decided that I should start to mix it up a bit in 2016. As usual, Bob Boilen and the good people at NPR Music had me covered. A couple of weeks ago, Bob Boilen recommended the video for Darlingside’s “God of Loss.”

The video is hauntingly beautiful and its imagery stuck with me for days. When I heard that Darlingside would be playing at the Hamilton, I jumped at the chance to go and see the band live. Hailing from Massachusetts, Harris Paseltiner, Don Mitchell, Auyon Mukharji, and Dave Senft, specialize in some of the most beautiful and innovative arrangements that I have heard in years. Often their sound evokes folk or the rock of the 1960s, but according to the band’s bio on their webpage they don’t emphasize genre (beyond “no jazz”) when composing.

Their innovation and genre-bending sound is evident on their most recent album, Birds Say. While I love the album, seeing the band live added another dimension to their sound. Birds Say is at times haunting, nostalgic – the songs call back to childhood and are filled with reminders of the things we lose or forget as we grow up. Even songs like “Go Back,” inspired by Back to the Future or “Harrison Ford” (self-explanatory), which are infused with humor are also intensely personal at times. During the composition of the album, the band members visited each other’s childhood homes and there is something both personal and universal in each song. At times you are lost in someone else’s memory, and at other times it is easy to find yourself lost in your own.

For the last few days, I’ve been wracking my brain trying to think of a description of the show and I keep returning to: absolutely lovely. The band members have a great sense of humor and commentary on all of the songs was hilarious and added to the overall of fun of the show. Live, the beauty in the lyrics and arrangements are magnified. The band’s sound is more complex live – the lyrics some how more poignant, the arrangements more beautiful, and the overall sound was just, well, lovely.

I highly recommend Birds Say and will be first in line to see the band live the next time they are back in D.C.

(Also, if Harrison Ford is reading this, I echo the band’s request from Wednesday night and you should totally star in the music video. Or, Calista Flockhart, if you are reading this, maybe you could lobby on Darlingside’s behalf?)

I feel like it's been a while since we've had a good Mellow Monday jam for you darlings and I'm remedying this today. I discovered the latest track from Mutual Benefit last Friday afternoon when my eyes were getting heavy and the rain was slowly dripping down outside. This song fit my mood so perfectly and brought me so much peace. I hope it does the same for you today.

{RECAP} kingman island bluegrass and folk festival 2016

Springtime in DC is time for exploring, picnics, food trucks, outdoor music, and laying in the grass with friends. This was just what Kingman Island Bluegrass Fest was PLUS lots of puppies, adorable dancing children, and recycling.

The seventh annual Bluegrass and Folk festival on this tucked away island in DC was the perfect outdoor festival. The festival featured five stages, meaning that you were never far away from charming live music, and smart touches like s'mores stations, free steel cups (yay, zero waste!), and lovable local vendors.

Enjoy our recap of the festival by the ever-talented Caleb Hargett and mark your calendars for this event next year!
