{CREATIVE} virginia arrisueno

Up next in our Creativity series is Virginia Arrisueno, owner and lead designer of DeNada. We met Virginia when she collaborated with Meg Biram, and we were so intrigued by her creative process. Read ahead as Virginia tells us about the music she listens to for inspiration, which ranges from somber composers to show tunes.

Who are you and what do you do that's cool and creative?
My name is Virginia Blanca Arrisueno, and I am the owner and lead designer of DeNada, a knitwear and knit accessories for women and men. Our collections are designed locally in our Washington DC workspace, and handmade in Peru, SA.

How do you define creativity?
Creativity to me is the ability to think outside the box, and create "something" whether it's music, art, or design in a beautiful and expressive form.

What do you listen to (or watch or read!) when you're looking for inspiration?
When I'm looking for inspiration, I listen to mostly instrumental music that tends to be on the somber yet hopeful side. Currently, my favorite composers are Dustin O'Halloran and Olafur Arnalds.

How does music influence your creative pursuit?
Whenever I'm in the zone of designing, music definitely helps with my creative pace. A lot of the times, I will create a playlist of my favorite songs prior to listening to it when I design to make sure that the rhythm and and pace were conducive to my design process.

Do you find yourself particularly drawn to types of music when you're working/creating versus when you're just enjoying life and doing something less focused?
Absolutely! When I'm creating, I listen mostly to somber instrumental music. When I am exercising like running outside, I listen to up beat music to keep me motivated and energized. And when I'm at home with my family, we tend to listen to the oldies: Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, etc.

Is there something specific you can listen to that immediately pulls you out of a slump?
Because I am huge fan of musicals, listening to show tunes can immediately pull me out of a slump.

Was there a particular song/album/artist that struck or inspired you when you were younger?
When I was younger, I went to see my first musical with my parents. We saw The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway and I loved it! All the theatrics and singing were amazing to me! Afterwards, my parents not only bought me the soundtrack but also the piano sheet music so that I could play the songs at home as well. I loved and still love all of their songs!

Thanks so much for sharing with us, Virginia -- stay in touch with Virginia on DeNada's beautiful instagram!
