{RECAP} billy joel

Brand-new Concert Correspondent Katy got to live my personal dream by spending this past Saturday lounging, swaying, and frolicking amongst my homeboys and girls at Farm Bureau Live in Virginia Beach as she took in a show from American legend Billy Joel! Check out her recap below and as you read enjoy my personal favorite Billy song--and yes, it's just because it mentions Norfolk.

When an American classic like Billy Joel opens his show by saying "I don't have anything new to play for you guys..." obviously the entire crowd is going to cheer ecstatically. "I appreciate you all coming out to hear me play, even though I haven't had anything new out in 20 years!" Cue more cheering.

On a perfect June evening, after suffering a freak ten minute rainstorm and a snafu with the parking which made us miss the entire opening act (Gavin DeGraw!), five friends gathered on the lawn at the Farm Bureau and settled in (squished in, really) between the other 20,000 people in attendance. It was an evening of hit after hit - "Vienna," "We Didn't Start the Fire," "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant," "She's Always A Woman," "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me," "Piano Man," and "Uptown Girl."

Billy sounded great. It looked like he was having a complete blast playing for several thousand adoring fans of all ages. We thought we'd be the youngest there and we weren't, not by a long shot. The weather held, although the bugs didn't - someone had to get him a fly swatter to keep by the piano, which he waved around with flair throughout the evening!

Notable moments included him hitting the high notes on "An Innocent Man" (after confessing he wasn't sure he could anymore), bringing a group of U.S. military onto the stage during "Goodnight Saigon" (which the military-heavy crowd in VA Beach ate right up), and singing "Only the Good Die Young" as his last encore song (with the opening line addressed to Virginia - how appropriate!). I did miss him playing "Big Shot," "Just the Way You Are," and "Longest Time." But to see him play some of his best hits, and the entire crowd singing along, was the kind of mood we were in tonight.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the show Katy!
