{INTERVIEW} madi diaz

Just when we were complaining about needing more female indie pop vocalists in our lives, we stumbled upon Madi Diaz. We had the chance to chat with this LA-based singer about her musical career, her guilty pleasures, her upcoming tour (with a DC stop) with X Ambassadors, and get probably the best answer we've ever received about being a female in the music industry!

Listen while you read:

Tell us about yourself! How long have you been making music and how did you get started?
I've been making music for a good while now and am lucky enough to have been making my living in music for six years! Every time I say it I still can't believe it!

How would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard it before? What song would you suggest they start with?
That question never gets any easier for me to answer. I make lush indie pop with a foundation of Americana. Chronologically, I would start with “Down We Go” from Plastic Moon, “Burn” from my last record, or “Tomorrow” from my new record! Phew, okay. Hard part is over.

Where do you find inspiration for your music?
Inspiration always comes about in a different way every time. It's always a surprise. I’m rarely ready for it, and that is kind of the best part.

You’re kicking off a pretty epic tour with X Ambassadors then Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. -- do you have a particular stop you're most excited for?
I’m the most excited for the long drives. I’ve been cooped up in California for a while finishing Phantom so I’m ready for highways again. I always love stopping through San Francisco and Portland. Chicago is going to be fantastic as well. Nashville is going to be epic; it's been far too long since I’ve played there and I STILL call it one of my homes. Philly and Boston will be lovely and nostalgic… NYC is our release kick off. I am SO excited.

What is it like being a young female in the music industry today?
I tend not to think about being a female in the industry. I find that if I approach anything in the mind set of "I am a female in this industry" that I’m just spending too much of my energy putting myself in a category.

We love your style in the "Stay Together" video -- do you have a go-to outfit that you stick with when you perform or is more a day-by-day kind of sartorial decision?
Thank you! I definitely have my go-to staples, but I try and pick up some flair as the weeks go by.

If you could collaborate with any artist (dead or alive), who would it be?
It’s a toss up between Maynard Keenan from TOOL and Peter Gabriel. Maynard has always been a huge glowing vocal love for me, and Peter Gabriel is such a pure artist. I’d freak out either way!

What's your go-to guilty pleasure jam?
Interpol’s Turn On the Bright Lights… like. the whole record. gimme the whole thing. Also, Paula Abdul's record Forever Your Girl always finds it's way back into my world. Such great songs.

It seems you've moved around quite a bit in the past few years -- where would be your dream location to "retire"?
My end game dream is not to have to choose. I’m hoping to start acquiring little bits of land across the country. No place you've really heard of but more stumbling upon the top of the most perfect hill or bottom of a green still valley. Building quiet sanctuaries and studios where I can make music forever with my favorite human beings. That’s the dream.

What artists are you listening to now? Who should we put on our radar?
I just got back from a really special weekend with my good buddy Sean Moeller who runs the Daytrotter blog out of Iowa. For his ten year anniversary with his wife and for his birthday he gathered some really special musicians to play a show. I fell in love with Lissie's music and found new music love in Nathaniel Rateliff and Field Report. Also, Christian Lee Hutson is an incredible guy you should check out. Wise beyond his years. Sean has his finger pretty squarely on the pulse. I had to start a new band just so I could show him something he's never heard of!

Thanks again to Madi for chatting with us! Be sure to catch her next Saturday, October 4 at DC9 with X Ambassadors! (tix are sold out so get your Craigslist stalking on!)
