{INTERVIEW} goldroom

We're thrilled to share our latest interview with Josh Legg of LA's Goldroom. After seeing Josh & Co at Trillectro last month, we can't get enough of their music. Read ahead as we chat with Josh about his latest EP release, singing gibberish, and who he wants to collaborate with next!

Listen while you read:

Tell us about yourself! How long have you been making music?
That'd probably be a question best asked of my parents. I've been writing songs for as long as I can remember. I probably never consciously did it, but I remember singing and banging on things when I was really young. I started actively making music pretty early on, recording stupid songs I was writing with my friends as early as like eight years old. I've been pretty obsessed with making music and trying to record it as well as possible ever since.

How would you describe your music to someone who's never heard it before?
That's a really hard question, and I tend to hate to put descriptive words to what I make. What I've always tried to do with Goldroom is to make organic and live music but to do it using modern electronic production advances that I've learned through making dance music. Music has always been pretty escapist to me so if anything else I guess I'd call it dreamy and cinematic.

Your latest EP Embrace just came out. What can we expect from this new EP?
I'm really proud of how this EP turned out. Its really the culmination of a couple of years of co-writing with a lot of talented songwriters and singers. My biggest goal in writing songs after I released Angeles was to step up the songwriting, and I think we've really accomplished that on this EP. I really want to tell stories and try and write emotional music.

What is your songwriting process like?
To me, the vocals are the most important part of the whole process. I write a LOT of instrumentals, but immediately the vocal melodies take precedent. I'm usually singing gibberish over chords right away, whether I'm writing with a guitar or a keyboard.

Where do you draw inspiration for your music?
Definitely my own life and my own dreams. Like I mentioned before, music is a very escapist thing for me, so often the songs I write are more about things I imagine happening to me more so than things that are actively happening in my life.

Do you prefer to make original music or create remixes? (Or both?)
I definitely love doing both, because for me at least, doing a remix is almost like re-writing the song from scratch. I really love writing originals, though. That's where I get to tell my story.

You've partnered up with some incredible musicians for some of your songs. What is it like to work with other musicians? Do you have a collaboration you're particularly proud of?
I love writing songs with people. Its definitely my life's biggest passion. No matter what happens with Goldroom down the line, I'll be happy in a studio writing songs with people forever. I'm definitely no prouder of any of my collaborations than any other. If we finish a song, then I'm happy!

Who would be your dream musician to collaborate with next?
I'd love to work with Jessie Rose or Chad Valley. I'm really open to working with anyone with a unique voice and a desire to explore the songwriting process, not just make a hit.

You're on quite the tour right now! What do you enjoy most about performing live?
Not knowing what will happen! Every night is exciting, and every song we play is different than the night before. That's the most exciting to me and why I enjoy playing with the whole band the most.

What's next for Goldroom? Can we expect a full length album soon?
I'm definitely getting back into the studio after this tour with the goal of writing a bunch more songs. Whether they turn into an album or not is yet to be seen. For now i just want to keep writing songs! I'll definitely be putting out a couple of more singles in the next handful of months, though!

DC! Goldroom will be performing at U St Musical Hall THIS THURSDAY night with Tesla Boy. Get your tickets here!

Finally, do yourself a favor and make sure you're following Goldroom on Instagram -- Josh is the king of sunsets and serenity.
